Dorsal Root Ganglion (DRG) Stimulation

What is dorsal root ganglion (DRG) stimulation?

The big nerves that run between the spinal cord and the body are called “spinal nerves”. There are 31 on each side of the body – from the neck (cervical), chest level (thoracic), low back (lumbar) and pelvis (sacral).

These nerves have bulges just as they leave the spine. The bulges are because they have their cell bodies (their engines and central controls) here. The bulges are known as dorsal root ganglia.  “Stimulation” (electrical pulse delivery) to a nerve ganglion can be used to target an area supplied by the nerve and can be an alternative or useful addition to spinal cord stimulation.
